Generalized Verlinde formulae for some Riemann surface automorphisms

The generalized Verlinde formulae expressing traces of mapping classes corresponding to automorphisms of certain Riemann surfaces, and the congruence relations on allowed modular representations following from them are presented. The surfaces considered are families of algebraic curves given by suitably chosen equations, the modular curve X(11)\mathcal{X}(11), and a factor curve of X(8)\mathcal{X}(8). The examples of modular curves illustrate how the study of arithmetic properties of suitable modular representations can be used to gain information on automorphic properties of Riemann surfaces.Comment: 9 pages, minor change

The integrated 3-point correlation function of cosmic shear

We present the integrated 3-point shear correlation function iζ±i\zeta_{\pm} -- a higher-order statistic of the cosmic shear field -- which can be directly estimated in wide-area weak lensing surveys without measuring the full 3-point shear correlation function, making this a practical and complementary tool to 2-point statistics for weak lensing cosmology. We define it as the 1-point aperture mass statistic MapM_{\mathrm{ap}} measured at different locations on the shear field correlated with the corresponding local 2-point shear correlation function ξ±\xi_{\pm}. Building upon existing work on the integrated bispectrum of the weak lensing convergence field, we present a theoretical framework for computing the integrated 3-point function in real space for any projected field within the flat-sky approximation and apply it to cosmic shear. Using analytical formulae for the non-linear matter power spectrum and bispectrum, we model iζ±i\zeta_{\pm} and validate it on N-body simulations within the uncertainties expected from the sixth year cosmic shear data of the Dark Energy Survey. We also explore the Fisher information content of iζ±i\zeta_{\pm} and perform a joint analysis with ξ±\xi_{\pm} for two tomographic source redshift bins with realistic shape-noise to analyse its power in constraining cosmological parameters. We find that the joint analysis of ξ±\xi_{\pm} and iζ±i\zeta_{\pm} has the potential to considerably improve parameter constraints from ξ±\xi_{\pm} alone, and can be particularly useful in improving the figure of merit of the dynamical dark energy equation of state parameters from cosmic shear data.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS; v2 matches the accepted manuscript; 18 pages + appendi

Simple Current Actions of Cyclic Groups

Permutation actions of simple currents on the primaries of a Rational Conformal Field Theory are considered in the framework of admissible weighted permutation actions. The solution of admissibility conditions is presented for cyclic quadratic groups: an irreducible WPA corresponds to each subgroup of the quadratic group. As a consequence, the primaries of a RCFT with an order n integral or half-integral spin simple current may be arranged into multiplets of length k^2 (where k is a divisor of n) or 3k^2 if the spin of the simple current is half-integral and k is odd.Comment: Added reference, minor change

Tilted pillar array fabrication by the combination of proton beam writing and soft lithography for microfluidic cell capture Part 2: Image sequence analysis based evaluation and biological application

    Get PDF
As a continuation of our previously published work, this paper presents a detailed evaluation of a microfabricated cell capture device utilizing a doubly tilted micropillar array. The device was fabricated using a novel hybrid technology based on the combination of proton beam writing and conventional lithography techniques. Tilted pillars offer unique flow characteristics and support enhanced fluidic interaction for improved immuno-affinity based cell capture. The performance of the microdevice was evaluated by an image sequence analysis based in-house developed single cell tracking system. Individual cell tracking allowed in-depth analysis of the cell-chip surface interaction mechanism from hydrodynamic point of view. Simulation results were validated by using the hybrid device and the optimized surface functionalization procedure. Finally, the cell capture capability of this new generation microdevice was demonstrated by efficiently arresting cells from a HT29 cellline suspension

Macrophage PPARg , a Lipid Activated Transcription Factor Controls the Growth Factor GDF3 and Skeletal Muscle Regeneration

    Get PDF
Tissue regenerationrequiresinflammatoryand repar- atory activity of macrophages. Macrophages detect and eliminate the damaged tissue and subsequently promote regeneration. This dichotomy requires the switch of effector functions of macrophages coordi- nated with other cell types inside the injured tissue.\ud The gene regulatory events supporting the sensory and effector functions of macrophages involved in tissue repair are not well understood. Here we show that the lipid activated transcription factor, PPAR g , is required for proper skeletal muscle regeneration, acting in repair macrophages. PPAR g controls the expression of the transforming growth factor- b (TGF- b ) family member, GDF3, which in turn regu- lates the restoration of skeletal muscle integrity by promoting muscle progenitor cell fusion. This work establishes PPAR g as a required metabolic sensor and transcriptional regulator of repair macrophages. Moreover, this work also establishes GDF3 as a secreted extrinsic effector protein acting on myo- blasts and serving as an exclusively macrophage- derived regeneration factor in tissue repair

The Ability of Soil Pore Network Metrics to Predict Redox Dynamics Is Scale Dependent

Variations in microbial community structure and metabolic efficiency are governed in part by oxygen availability, which is a function of water content, diffusion distance, and oxygen demand; for this reason, the volume, connectivity, and geometry of soil pores may exert primary controls on spatial metabolic diversity in soil. Here, we combine quantitative pore network metrics derived from X-ray computed tomography (XCT) with measurements of electromotive potentials to assess how the metabolic status of soil depends on variations of the overall pore network architecture. Contrasting pore network architectures were generated using a Mollisol—A horizon, and compared to intact control samples from the same soil. Mesocosms from each structural treatment were instrumented with Pt-electrodes to record available energy dynamics during a regimen of varying moisture conditions. We found that volume-based XCT-metrics were more frequently correlated with metrics describing changes in available energy than medial-axis XCT-metrics. An abundance of significant correlations between pore network metrics and available energy parameters was not only a function of pore architecture, but also of the dimensions of the sub-sample chosen for XCT analysis. Pore network metrics had the greatest power to statistically explain changes in available energy in the smallest volumes analyzed. Our work underscores the importance of scale in observations of natural systems

Consulting (in Writing) to the Corporation: Principles and Pragmatics

Provenance information provides a useful basis to verify whether a particular application behavior has been adhered to. This is particularly useful to evaluate the basis for a particular outcome, as a result of a process, and to verify if the process involved in making the decision conforms to some pre-defined set of rules. This is significant in a healthcare scenario, where it is necessary to demonstrate that patient data has been processed in a particular way. Understanding how provenance information may be recorded, stored, and subsequently analyzed by a decision maker is therefore significant in a service oriented architecture, which involves the use of third party services over which the decision maker does not have control. The aggregation of data from multiple sources of patient information plays an important part in subsequent treatments that are proposed for a patient. A tool to navigate through and analyze such provenance information is proposed, based on the use of a portal framework that allows different views on provenance information to co-exist. The portal enables users to add custom portlets enabling application specific views that would facilitate particular decision making
